Permaculturing in Portugal

One family's attempts to live in a more planet-friendly way

The trouble with voles …

… is that they seem inordinately fond of our root vegetables. These beetroots are the latest victims.

The trouble with voles is that they eat all your root vegetables

I was surprised a month or two ago to find onions hollowed out in similar fashion. I didn’t think voles would go for such a pungent vegetable (and our onions really bring tears to your eyes). Some of the carrots have suffered a similar fate. Not that I’m averse to sharing our produce with the wildlife here, but there’s taking a fair share and there’s taking the piss …

However, we’re assured that Nelly’s mother is a champion vole catcher so she joins the team of two cats. Voles, you have been warned!
